Our Mission and History

Heritage Provider Network (HPN), with its network of affiliated medical groups and physicians, comprises one of the largest healthcare delivery networks in California.

HPN began in 1979 when founder Richard Merkin, M.D. was asked by a local health plan to start a medical group in an underserved area. The group succeeded far beyond expectations as HPN's comprehensive approach to care management proved to be exactly what was needed to provide quality, cost-effective healthcare. This accomplishment caught the eye of other health plans that, over the years, requested that HPN duplicate this success in new geographic locations.

Today, HPN is one of the few limited Knox-Keene licensed entities in California. This allows us to provide innovative programs and services designed specifically for the managed care environment. HPN and Lakeside Community Healthcare have been successful in delivering top-notch care while establishing long-standing relationships with doctors and other providers.
