What causes dry eye and how it can be treated?
Dry eye is a condition that happens when your eyes don’t make enough tears or your tears evaporate too fast. This can make your eyes feel uncomfortable, red, and irritated. Some causes of dry eye can be getting older, certain medical conditions, your diet, and things about your environment like dry air. If you don’t get treatment for dry eye, it can damage your eyes, lead to infections, and make it hard to see or do the things you like. To treat dry eye, you can use eye drops, ointments, or medicines your doctor prescribes. Some people might even need a medical procedure. Your eye doctor can help you figure out the best treatment for your specific needs.

Is dry eye syndrome common?
Dry eye is a common problem that affects many people in the U.S. – about 16 million every year. One major reason for dry eye is something called Meibomian gland dysfunction (MGD), which affects 85% of people with dry eye. These glands are located in our upper and lower eyelids. If they don’t work right, they can cause blockages in our tears, which can make our eyes inflamed and not as protected as they should be.
How can my diet affect dry eye?
What you eat and drink can affect your dry eye symptoms. If you eat lots of processed foods and unhealthy fats, like trans fats, it can make your dry eye worse. However, cutting back on caffeine and alcohol may help lessen dry eye signs and eating foods with omega-3 fatty acids, like salmon, walnuts, avocados and flaxseed, may help your eyes make more tears and reduce inflammation. It is also important to drink enough water to keep your eyes wet.
Will dry eye treatments be covered by my health insurance?
Depending on the dry eye services required, you may be covered by your medical insurance (not vision plan). Certain services, procedures and products are not covered by any type of insurance. We will always inform you of these out-of-pocket expenses before care is provided. For these services, we accept payment in cash, check, Visa or Mastercard.
